The breadcrumb trail shows the route you have taken as you move through Tribe, so you always know where you are and how you arrived there. It records each record you open while drilling through customers, opportunities, contacts and other linked records, and lets you return to any earlier step in a single click. The trail works across the whole application, in your everyday entity and dashboard areas as well as in configuration and settings. By following this guide, you will learn how to read the trail, step back through it, and use it to stay oriented during deep navigation.

What Is the Breadcrumb Trail?
A breadcrumb trail is a row of links that records the path you actually walked through the system, rather than a fixed position in a menu tree. The first record you open becomes the anchored starting point, called the origin, and it stays in place for as long as the trail lasts. Each time you open a linked record from there, Tribe adds it to the end of the trail. Because the trail follows your journey, it reflects the exact steps you took to reach the record in front of you, and every step stays clickable so you can retrace or jump back at any point.
Did you know? A trail breadcrumb is path-based: it mirrors the journey you took to arrive somewhere. This differs from a positional breadcrumb, which shows a fixed location within a set structure regardless of how you got there. Tribe uses the trail model everywhere, so the breadcrumb always matches your own route.
Where Is the Breadcrumb Displayed?
The trail appears at the top left of the screen, directly below the global navigation and above the content of the page. It is present across the whole application: when you explore entity and dashboard areas, and when you work inside configuration and settings.
Note: Once the breadcrumb trail is enabled for your environment, it works automatically. No setup or configuration is required.
How to Use the Breadcrumb Trail
Open a record, for example a customer. This record becomes the origin, the anchored starting point of your trail.
Drill into a related record, such as an opportunity, then a contact, and so on. Tribe adds each record you open to the end of the trail.
Read the trail from left to right to see the path you have taken to reach the record now open in front of you.
Select any item in the trail to return to that record. Tribe takes you straight back to it, with no need to use the browser back button or reopen the menu.
How the Trail Behaves
When a trail grows long, Tribe keeps it readable:
Once the trail passes three items, the middle steps collapse into a … overflow marker.
Select the … marker to open the ordered list of the steps it currently holds.
Choose any step in that list to jump straight to it.
A few rules keep the trail reliable as you move around:
The trail keeps a limited number of steps. It records up to eight, and if you drill deeper than that, the oldest step after the origin drops off so the trail stays a manageable length.
The origin, the first item in the trail, is anchored and is never dropped, however far you drill, so your starting point stays available even on a long path.
Long record names are shortened to fit. Hover over a shortened item to see its full name in a tooltip, and the complete name is kept in the … overflow menu.
The trail clears and starts again when you run a global search, switch to a different main navigation area or workspace, or open a page directly by its URL.
If you return to a record already in your trail, Tribe trims the trail back to that record instead of adding it a second time.
Note: Some tabs behave as their own location and some do not. When a tab is a list whose rows open their own pages, such as an Automations tab, opening a row adds that tab to the trail. When a tab is only a different view of the record you are already on, such as Hours, Timeline or Kilometers, switching between those views leaves the trail unchanged.
Using the Trail in Configuration Areas
The trail works in configuration and settings in the same way as everywhere else. When you open a record from a configuration page, that configuration page becomes the origin of a new trail. It appears as a single item showing only its own name, for example User roles, rather than the full configuration path. From there, drilling into related records appends them to the trail as usual. Select the origin item to return to the configuration page, which also clears the trail.
Tips and Best Practices
Use the … overflow to jump several steps back at once, rather than selecting each record in turn.
Hover over a shortened name to confirm you are returning to the right record before you select it.
A global search or a workspace switch starts a fresh trail, so finish any related exploration before you search if you want to keep your current path.
Quick Summary
The breadcrumb trail records the path you take as you move through records and configuration in Tribe, with an anchored origin and every step clickable. Selecting any step returns you to that record in one click, and long paths collapse into an overflow marker to keep the trail compact. The trail resets when you run a global search, switch navigation area or workspace, or open a page by a direct URL.
